拉近和拉远境头以审视复杂信息（第六章）
　　这个方法背后的某些方法论和理论的基础是眼／脑（实际上是整个大脑）通过进化所形成的理解复杂环境的方式。呈现在我们眼前的总是非常复杂的情景。眼／脑倾向于关注其中一小部分以检查细节。视野中的其余部分就提供了“焦点之外”的背景信息。眼睛的中央，即视网膜的中央凹，是视锥细胞最集中的地方，看细节也最清楚。眼睛在感兴趣的事物之间转换注视点，而不会在某个物体上停留太长时间，这个过程称为“扫视”，在此过程中，注意首先转移，然后引导目光。
　　有趣的是，如果眼／脑在某个物体上停留过久，大脑就不再理会它。聚焦在过于狭窄的范围内会导致眼睛呆视，就像在单调的高速公路上司机盯着白线，会进入催眠状态一样。另一方面，范围过宽的焦点会导致迷茫和混乱。若要保持清醒，眼光就要在场景中不断移动，从而在一定时间后形成对背景的感知。构建了背景之后，大脑就可以通过填充丢失的细节形成对整个场景的一致认识。＇33＇

一个内省的世界：认识论上的惟我主义（第九章）
　　弗里曼认为，大脑接收着大量感觉传人，这些感觉传人被转译成内在的、自我一致的世界，他称之为“认识论上的惟我主义”。弗里曼和平克尔都认为人类大脑是在社会组织活动中演化着的，乐于接受更为广泛的合作和共享信息。＇34＇
　　受佛教思想影响的瓦雷拉，就这种意义上的自我有一个有趣的看法。他提出了“虚拟自我”或“无我之我”的概念，那是一种我们内在的鲜活体验。　＇35＇

直觉（第十章）
　　直觉有别于我们的基本本能——本能不是通过学习获得的——但这些本能影响着我们的直觉，塑造我们的行为。我们的天性是复杂的，反映了动物进化过程带给我们的根本影响。例如，我们可以通过观察别人的眼睛推测其意图——这是一种古老的动物本能，我们可以用之应对形势。脑干调节着四种活动：逃跑、战斗、觅食和繁殖。这些活动使我们具有了采取紧急行动的能力或偏向。＇36＇
　　我们的直觉能力是在与自然界的相互作用中发展而来的。＇37＇在研究人的决策过程时，达马西奥和普安卡雷（Damasio　and　Poincare）指出，在解决问题时，我们只考虑预选的选项，而不是尝试检验每个可能的选项。这个预选过程既可以是有意识的，也可以是暗藏的，它一般是根据直觉进行的，尽管最终的选择可能是基于分析。＇38＇
　　虽然情绪通常被排斥在“理性的决策过程”之外（例如我们经常抱怨说：“你太情绪化了”），但越来越多的研究认识到，情感在决策过程中是很重要的，甚至有人说是不可缺少的一部分。情绪和情感是我们如何看待事物、做出决策的基础。情绪引导认知，评价导致情感，如同认识的其他层面，情感对构成客体或事件意义的一系列心理表象都有影响。＇39＇

　　弗朗西斯科·瓦雷拉曾描述过一个进入个人意识体验的方法。他称此方法融会了内省法、现象学和佛教禅定。他的研究采纳了这些传统方法并试图萃取它们的共性。他认为，要想更加清醒地觉知我们的意识体验，需要三种心法：摒除杂念、返观内心和任其自然。＇40＇
　　在一次访谈中，布莱恩·阿瑟（Brian　Arthur）谈到深入“更深层的意识领域”＇41＇的问题，他指出，要提取这种更深层的知识需要经历三个步骤：完全的专注（观察，观察，再观察）、内省（让内在的知识呈现出来）以及立即行动（依心之所愿提取新知）。这个过程与“任其自然”的做法是一致的。
